By moving through the design process - space planning, drafting, rendering, design development, budget management and ultimately, installation - I work with clients to create spaces that are as functional for them as they are beautiful. DRIVERS OF YOUR CAREER PATH: I have always followed what I love, which has usually been deemed the "less practical" path, but ultimately has inspired me to build my own business in Interior Design. Years of experience in Fine Art and Event Planning led me to realize where my strengths are, and also my weaknesses. And of course, my network. I would not be close to where I am today without those who have helped me on my path. WORDS OF WISDOM: Do what you love. I am happiest, most fulfilled and dedicated to my work when it is work that I am deeply invested in. Throughout my career, I have learned that a great opportunity is only great if it's the right opportunity for you - make sure it's aligned with your passions. Oh, and talk to everyone! Xander Jones '04 Hometown: Pomfret, CT Preferred Email: [email protected] EDUCATION: College 1: Ohio Wesleyan University, B.A. History College 2: Ohio University, M.A. Athletic Administration JOB HISTORY: Company/Org1: St. George's School Position: Assistant Dean of Students BRIEF JOB DESCRIPTION: In the boarding school world, I work closely with the entire community as a member of the Dean of Students Office, History Department, coaching and dorm head. The environment requires you to be a bit of everything. I believe strongly that the best in the profession have an ability to educate, parent, and friend through a variety of means. DRIVERS OF YOUR CAREER PATH: Reflecting on my upbringing, my career path was shaped by my parents, and many members of the Pomfret School faculty. First as a fac-brat and then as a student, the relationships built during that time further allowed me to understand ,and appreciate, the impact that educators can have in this unique environment. As such, it is my hope that I can put forth a similar effort to those students/fac-brats that I have encountered and will continue to encounter in education. WORDS OF WISDOM: Welcome feedback, embrace criticism, reflect often, make an adjustment. |
EDUCATION Steve Harkey ’08 Hometown: Millis, MA Preferred Email: [email protected] EDUCATION: College 1: Clark University, B.A., Corporate Communication College 2: Columbia University, M.A., Economics and Education Policy CAREER EXPERIENCE: Company/Org 1: Democracy Prep Public Schools Position: Data Systems Associate BRIEF JOB DESCRIPTION: Democracy Prep is a Charter Management Organization operating about 25 schools in 7 states. I work as a member of the data team, providing systems design and support to school-based staff, including teachers, operations teams, and principals. In addition to the systems work, I also support data reporting for compliance and develop tools to analyze the impact of policies. Ultimately, it's a lot of work in spreadsheets and data organization. I get to be part of some important conversations about how to improve the quality of our schools, and my reports sometimes drive those conversations whether I'm a part of them or not. DRIVERS OF YOUR CAREER PATH: I had gone to college to study journalism, switched to public relations, and hated it by the time I was in my senior year. I reassessed to determine what mattered to me, and -- after reflecting -- the one value that stood out was education. My notoriously frugal parents placed a premium on education, and I had been in private school my whole life. However, most people don't have that option, and I wanted to see what it was like to work in public education, specifically in schools serving a demographic that couldn't afford a private option. I got my first job volunteering in a school in West Philadelphia, and that led me to believe that education was a critical issue, and I have since committed my career to improving educational choices for all students. WORDS OF WISDOM: While a lot of people will stress the soft skills: professional writing, interpersonal tact, willingness to learn, etc..., never discount the reality that hard skills allow you to add value to an organization immediately. For the rest of your time at Pomfret, and certainly in college, don't shy away from math, science, and technology courses, since there is almost no context in which those won't be helpful and advance your career. You don't have to make a career working in those fields, but having some data literacy or a functional knowledge of statistics or programming will get you noticed by leadership and appreciated by the people who do have careers in quant fields. |

I manage the Export program for five companies, writing internal procedures, performing audits, training, acting as a primary contact for the U.S. Government, and attending conferences. I work closely with the Engineering and Quality departments to ensure we meet our international and domestic customers demands when items need to be exported. DRIVERS OF YOUR CAREER PATH: I had a lot of opportunities to learn once I joined the workforce. I started off as an engineering student and an intern at a local manufacturing company. I started off dropping nails into a live electrical system and recording the data, or lighting it on fire to see what happened. When the project was over I moved into Quality because that was where my skillset really shined. I am meticulous and a writer, something I learned at Pomfret, especially through the AP Biology course. I really enjoy a good challenge, something that stimulates my mind. These things all combined into a unique opportunity to make systems work better. When I changed jobs in 2014, I was presented with the opportunity to learn about International Trade and Export Compliance, I grabbed it with both hands. I took some online classes, attended conferences, and had some great guidance from another employee. I have worked in Export Compliance for the past 4 years and now manage the export compliance program for the Whitcraft Group - an aerospace manufacturing company, with sites all throughout New England. WORDS OF WISDOM: Never pass up the opportunity to learn something new, it could really light you up, and if it doesn't, you now have a new tool in your pocket that you can use. Remember to breathe, this too shall pass. |

Ben Tarlow ’08 Hometown: New York, NY Preferred Email: [email protected] EDUCATION: College 1: Emory University, BA Art History CAREER HISTORY: Company: Mid-Century Motoring Position: Founder/Director BRIEF JOB DESCRIPTION: Mid-Century Motoring is a classic and exotic car showroom, with a focus on European marques (namely Alfa Romeo, Ferrari, Porsche, Jaguar, and Lancia). I originally began as an importation service for non-US market classics that weren't readily available on this side of the Atlantic. Since then the business has expanded into brokerage services for car collectors including acquisition, consignment, appraisal, storage, and transport. Typically I represent anywhere from 10-15 automobiles on premises, and spend much of my time meeting and interacting with buyers and sellers worldwide. I also use my job as a shameless excuse to go racing, and currently campaign a '59 Austin Healey and a '74 Mini--all in the name of networking and brand awareness! DRIVERS OF YOUR CAREER PATH: Perhaps most importantly I was never told growing up that I had to do anything in particular, and that gave me freedom to really discover what I enjoy. I had a miserable first job out of college at an auction house in NYC, and while walking home the day I was fired it occurred to me that I had the opportunity to redefine what success meant. It didn't have to be a bigger paycheck or a promotion or a fancier business card, it needed to be a completely new lifestyle. I've worked my "dream job" for five years now, and like anything it's a mixed bag at times, but the highs far outweigh the lows. WORDS OF WISDOM: If you like something, even if you don't currently work in that field, network and insert yourself. Do it when you're looking for a job, and even more importantly, when you're not. And while we're at it, learn to drive stick! Otherwise I'll be out of customers in 30 years... |

I am in charge of all engineering, maintenance, documentation and quality control for the facility and the collections. DRIVERS OF YOUR CAREER PATH: I got my start in television at 15 and was bitten by the production and engineering bug. I also have a natural affinity for history, and especially technology and engineering history in communications. I've been given opportunities to participate in bleeding edge technologies at their start like HDTV, digital radio & television broadcasting, the switch from tape-based to file based media recording, and the creation of the audiovisual preservation industry. WORDS OF WISDOM: Expect change and embrace it whenever possible. There are very few lifetime jobs now, so think about what you want to do, what you like to do, and what your goals for a career are and plan for where you want to go. But be prepared for change if you don't succeed, don't end up liking your choice, or your chosen field changes. Be kind and courteous whenever possible because you will probably be working with many of the people you run into in the future. Get to know a subject and be thorough and success will usually follow. If you are lucky enough to be good at something that pays, do it. If you aren't, do something you can be good at and get paid for, even if you don't love it. |
